Rest Time

Minimum rest time between two shifts — automatically considered by the algorithm.

Wiki > Shift Planning > Rest Time

What is the minimum rest time?

The minimum rest time is the number of hours that must elapse between the end of one shift and the start of the next shift of the same employee. Classic: 11 hours — what most labour law requires.

Example

Maria works late shift until 10 p.m. With 11 hours minimum rest time, her next shift may start no earlier than 9 a.m. the following day.

Where to configure

In the AutoPilot setup there's a field Minimum rest time (in hours). You can adjust the value — e.g. lower for industries with exceptions, higher if you want to be stricter than the legal requirement.

The value applies company-wide for all employees.

How the algorithm handles it

  • On automatic assignment, shifts that would violate rest time aren't even offered.
  • On manual assignment, PlanFast warns — you can override the warning if you know the special case.
  • For shift swap and shift handover, rest time is checked on both sides before suitable colleagues are suggested.

Special cases

Split shifts

If someone works morning and evening on the same day, the break in between is shorter than the minimum rest time. PlanFast detects and reports this.

Early shift after late shift

Classic conflict pattern. The algorithm avoids it automatically when the minimum rest time would be violated.

Industry exceptions

Some industries allow shorter rest times (e.g. hospitality 10 hours instead of 11). Set the value in the AutoPilot settings accordingly.
